Lower Whispering 2025
‘Lower whispering’ is an installation-based project that restores the fading memories and traces of a region through artistic language, and reinterprets the lives and voices of its citizens embedded within, in new ways.
The former Jeonbang and Ilsin Textile Factories in Gwangju, along with the nearby Balsan Village, are spaces that vividly embody the complex layers of Korea’s modern and contemporary history—from labor exploitation during the Japanese colonial period, to industrialization and women’s labor, and more recently, to large-scale redevelopment.
However, today, under the names of development, capital, and urban regeneration, the historical buildings and everyday spaces of this area, as well as the traces of individual lives within them, are gradually disappearing.
This project begins with the question of what and how we, as artists and as citizens living in the present era, should remember and record.
‘Lower whispering – 낮은 속삭임’은 사라져가는 지역의 기억과 흔적을 예술적 언어로 복원하고, 그 속에 깃든 시민들의 삶과 목소리를 새로운 방식으로 재조명하는 설치 기반 프로젝트입니다.
광주 전방·일신방직 공장과 인근 발산마을 등은 일제강점기 노동 착취, 산업화와 여성 노동, 그리고 최근의 대규모 개발에 이르기까지, 한국 근·현대사의 복잡한 층위를 고스란히 간직한 공간입니다.
그러나 오늘날, 개발과 자본, 도시 재생이라는 이름 아래 이곳의 역사적 건축물과 일상 공간, 그리고 그 속에 깃든 소소한 개인의 삶의 흔적들은 점차 사라지고 있습니다.
이 프로젝트는 예술가로서, 그리고 동시대를 살아가는 시민으로서 ‘우리는 무엇을, 어떻게 기억하고 기록할 것인가’라는 질문에서 출발합니다.
