망각의 각인
"How are our lives remembered"
"Breath," the most fundamental physical act of being alive, yet this "act of breathing" goes unrecognized and forgotten. If society is an organism, the individuals living in it every day are the inhales and exhales that make it function and grow.
'Oblivion; Imprinted' exists as an extension of the "Breath" project, which seeks to unravel various life trajectories of contemporaries into visual language.
Through this project, which continued for 11 months from April 2021 based in the Daegu area, we aim to remember the history that will disappear in the near future and talk about the "forgotten" lives around us by starting with interviewing the history of the middle-aged and elderly who created the current Daegu, and imprinting each of their histories on flooring materials collected from their living spaces.
This work, which began with conceptualization while staying in a large-scale rental apartment complex in Busan, passing by a mother who spends her day sitting fixed without waiting for anything at the entrance of an unnamed alley, and someone's father who spends most of his time sitting alone in a park during the day, aims to ask questions about the meaning of 'us' and life that have become faint in the contemporary era by calmly revealing and remembering lives that clearly exist around us but are not revealed.
By remembering the ordinary lives that pass by me every day, but which I might not have recognized or might have tried to ignore because they were not revealed, I want to talk about the meaning of life again.
This is also a process of finding an answer to the question, "How will my history be remembered?"
"I" is "I" within "us," and the moment we forget the existence of "us,
" the existence of "I" also becomes faint.
“우리의 삶은 어떻게 기억되는가”
살아있기 위한 가장 근원적인 물리적 행위인 “숨”, 하지만 그 “숨의 행위“를 인식되지 못하고 망각된다. 사회가 하나의 유기체라면 그 속에서 매일을 살아가는 개인은 그것을 기능하고 성장하게 하는 들숨과 날숨이다.
‘Oblivion;Imprinted – 망각의 각인’은 동시대를 살아가는 다양한 삶의 궤적을 찾아 시각 언어로 풀어내고자 하는 “숨” 프로젝트의 연장 선상에 존재한다.
2021년 4월부터 대구 지역을 기반으로 11개월 간 이어진 이 프로젝트를 통해 현재의 대구를 만든 중, 장년층의 역사를 인터뷰하는 것을 시작으로 그들의 생활 공간에서 수집한 바닥재에 각각의 역사를 각인 함으로서 가까운 미래에 사라질 역사를 기억하고자 하고, “망각”되는 주변의 삶에 대해 이야기 하고자 한다.
부산의 대규모 임대아파트 단지에 머물며 어느 이름 모를 골목 어귀에서 기다리는 무언가도 없이 붙박혀 앉아 하루를 보내는 어머니, 한 낮의 공원에 홀로 앉아 대부분의 시간을 보내는 누군가의 아버지를 스치며 구상을 시작한 이 작업은 분명히 우리 주변에 존재하지만 드러나지 않은 삶을 덤덤히 드러내고 기억 함으로서 동시대에 희미해진 ‘우리’ 와 삶의 의미에 대한 질문을 건네고자 한다.
매일 나를 스쳐 지나는 주변의 삶들, 그러나 드러나지 않아 인지하지 못하거나 애써 외면하려 했을지 모를 보통의 삶을 기억 함으로서 다시, 삶의 의미에 대해 이야기하고자 한다.
이것은 곧 “나의 삶은 어떻게 기억되고자 하는가? 하는 질문에 대한 답을 찾아가는 과정이기도 하다.
“나”는 “우리” 안의 “나”이며, “우리”의 존재를 잊는 순간 “나”의 존재도 희미해진다.
